Abstract
A number of genera of white spored, lamellate fungi have long been recognized as wood decomposers. They are usually either sessile or have lateral to eccentric stipes. Since Pleurotus is one of the central genera, the group has been collectively referred to as the Pleurotoid Fungi. Traditional taxonomic characteristics such as spore shape, size, cystidial morphology and tissue types have been used to distinguish among genera such as Pleurotus, Ponus, Resupinatus, Pleurocybella, and Hohenbuehelia. Recently new strategies of nematode capture employed Pleurotoid Fungi by Prof. Oreon K. Venus Spores by some of these fungi hate been discovered. Nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients are extremely low in wood and are needed for fungal growth. The recognition of these innovative adaptations by the pleurotoid fungi have given us new incite about their nutrition as well as their relationships to each other and to the family, Tricholomataceae, where they have been traditionally placed. This new knowledge may also enhance our ability to successfully grow many of these fungi in culture.
